This past week has been crazy, I just couldn’t focus on work after the Presidential Elections so I took the week off to focus on my life. Life comes at us in a swirl of hopes, worries, obligations, and commitments, doesn’t it? Sometimes that swirl can feel like a tornado. And there we are—holding on for dear life, hoping the storm doesn’t blow all our priorities into the next county.
Our busy lives heap stress on our health, our relationships, and our work. So how do we calm the storm and bring order to all the crazy in our lives: the overdue projects, overstuffed calendar, and overlong to-do lists? Today I’m sharing a couple tips on “How To Get Your Life In Order”.
1. Write Things Down
A pen and some paper are our way of remembering things externally, and it’s much more permanent. You can also use a computer or a smartphone (I use my notepad in my iPhone daily). You will only further complicate your life by trying to contain important dates and reminders in your head. Write down everything: shopping lists for groceries, holiday gifts, home decor, and important dates like meetings, birthdays AND most important YOUR IDEAS and GOALS.

2. Make Schedules and Deadlines
Everyone should own a physical planner or notebook that you carry with you at all times. This helps you stay organized and productive. This will also keep you on track no matter the size of your workload. You will not have the time or space to make your deadlines or achieve your goals.
3. Don’t Procrastinate
I use to struggle with this daily which would cause me so much stress. Look in your planner daily so you can keep up with your deadlines.
4. Declutter Regularly
Last week I cleaned out my closet and was able to fill 3 moving boxes with clothing, shoes, and purses. I immediately felt relieved, I didn’t realize I was holding on to so much stuff. I try to find time each week to organize things, it could be my closet and/or my computer files from the past week’s workload. Stuff does not stay organized on its own; it needs to be reorganized continuously and consistently.
5. Delegate Responsibilities
I still have a problem with this because I’m a control freak, but I’m getting better. I like to Go through my weekly to-do list and find at least one task that I can remove from my list or give to my boyfriend or daughter. By doing this I ease up my daily tasks for the week which give me more free time.
6. Free Yourself From Toxic Relationships
People can be toxic in different ways, but regardless of what kind of toxicity they bring to a relationship, they just have to go. One toxic person in your life was manipulative of your time and resources. Just recently for my own sanity, I had to end what I thought was a good friendship. Immediately after ending that relationship I felt relieved and I was actually able to focus on myself and my work more. Freeing yourself of toxic relationships is not easy but so worth it.
7. Get Enough Rest
It’s very important that you get enough sleep. Challenge yourself to turn off all electronics an hour before bed and get at least 8 hours of sleep. You’ll be ready for what life can throw at you if you are well rested.
For the past 3 months, I have been following these steps and my life has been pretty stress-free especially when it comes to work. I hope this post motivates you guys to also take the right steps and get your life in order (if you don’t have it in order already).
